  Disc insulator also known as tension insulator, suspension insulator or string insulator is used in high voltage transmission and distribution lines which are designed for fulfilling the required electro mechanical strength. Disc insulators are used for providing insulation as well as support to the line conductors in suspension and tension systems, as required. As per the IS (Indian Standard) and IEC (International Electrotechnical Commssion) Standard Disc insulator should be able to withstand minimum mechanical strengths of 45kN, 70kN, 90kN or 120kN as per the requirement. The above insulator is Ball and Socket type disc insulator having the top fitting shaped like a ball and bottom like a socket, it is commonly called B&S type disc insulator.
